“The marriage between George Emmanuel and Ekaete Emmanuel is hereby dissolved. The last child of the marriage should be given N2,000as food allowance every month till she attains six years of age.”This was the judgment given by Mr Olafenwa Ramon, president, Grade ‘C’ Customary Court sitting at Inalende, Mokola, Ibadan, Oyo State, after observing that the relationship between the couple had broken down. Thirty-nine-year-old George had instituted a divorce suit against his wife, Ekaete, over her alleged wayward ways.George told the court that his wife was fond of leaving home early in the morning and sometimes late at night without his consent, adding that at times she would bring her lovers to their matrimonial home.“I have warned her on many occasions not to leave the house in the night, but she has failed to listen to me.“I believe she goes out to meet her lovers. “She once came home with one of these and while quarelling, they both pounced on me and beat me toa pulp,” he said.George also alleged that his wife wanted to kill.“we used to eat together, but suddenly she started eating alone.“There was a day she prepared me food and I asked her to eat out of it,but she refused.“Since then, I have been careful and watchful so as not to die prematurely.‘I’ve come to seek for divorce based on these issues.I want us to go our seperate ways and also havecustody of our children.”Responding, Ekaete refutted George’s claim.According to her, she stopped eating with George when he started behaving irrationally.“How can I plan to kill someone whom I have three children for and what joy do I derive from doing such?”, she asked.“I have been taking care of him and the children. I don’t have any lover not to mention bringing them home to beat him.“My lord, if he wants us to part ways, let it be,” she stated. After llistening to both parties, the court president dissolved the 10-year-old union and awarded custody of the first and second child to George.
